Libel is libel, whether it comes from a newspaper or some guy punching a keyboard in his pajamas. Ditto copyright. First Amendment rights cover every citizen. The only specific laws that cover news outlets are so-called "shield" laws -- which exist in some states but not others -- that make it difficult for authorities to force journalists to reveal their sources on speciific stories. NOTE: Shield laws do NOT apply in libel cases. So learn the law and follow it. Bloggers, for the most part, are not "journalists," as in people who go out to find, verify and synthesize information in coherent form. They are gleaners, who pick up the fruits of journalists' labors -- i.e., information -- then opinionate about whichever bits and pieces suit their interests. Which is why shield laws are rarely relevant when bloggers get themselves in a legal pickle.
